CUTOFFS

Among my favorite things to do in woodturning is making something from scrap. There's something inherently fascinating about the challenge of seeing how small a piece I can make and what I can achieve with scrap wood that might otherwise be discarded.  So last year I started selling these boxes full of great usable material for pen blanks, small turnings, ornaments, even small hollow forms . . . and they're priced at current weight well below (about 40% or more) the current weight cost of whole burls.

Pieces I'm making from cutoffs . . . Left is Russian Olive Burl and right is a small gummy Vasticola burl I recently cut illustrating how I try to maximize use of the material. I should be able to get at least 7 pieces from this burl.

This is about the actual size, perhaps a bit larger, of the piece above left on the glue block

Above . . . thumbnails (click on the pictures to enlarge) of some thin slices suitable for inlay work or perhaps some small veneer projects . . . Black Morrel Burl, H. Rosewood Burl, Red Mallee Burl, Paela Burl, Coolibah Burl, Red River Gum Burl and Quilted lace Sheoak.  Thicknesses vary from piece to piece and some, not surprisingly, have warped. Nonetheless, some great material.

$100

Since taking this picture, I've added another 5 lbs for 70 lbs total of a great variety of cutoffs at about a 40% discount to a cap price corrected for current weight.
